Gloucester County College wins two and forces a winner take all championship game on Mother's Day

Fans were treated to beautiful weather and superb baseball as Gloucester County College first eliminated Brookdale Community College and then edged past Camden County College to force a winner take all championship game on Sunday at noon.  The following are capsule summaries of Saturday's games:

Gloucester County broke open a 1-1 tie with three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to eliminate Brookdale.  With one out, Sean Feeney walked, advanced to second on a single by Thomas Kain, and scored on a double to the wall by Eric Barbieri.  Zach Passerelle singled through a drawn in infield to plate both Kain and Barbieri.  Up to then the game was a pitcher's duel between Gloucester's Bill Mendek and Brookdale's Rich Gabriel.  Mendek pitched a complete game allowing seven hits, one run, with 4 strikeouts and just one walk.  Gabriel, who was sharp throughout, gave up just five hits, two runs, while striking out 7.

                   Camden County College             2

After spotting Camden County College a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, Gloucester County scored single runs in the second and third innings to tie the score.  The Roadrunners broke the tie in the bottom of the seventh inning with two runs that decided the game.  Lerone Lashley singled and was sacrificed to second by Sean Feeney.  Thomas Kain then launched a double down the left field line to give the Roadrunners the lead.  After an intentional walk to Eric Barbieri, Zach passerelle lined a single to left that scored Kain.  Once again the fans were treated to outstanding pitching by GLoucester County's Andrew Owens and Camden County's Brett Hudson.  Owens picked up the win by pitching seven innning, allowing two runs, five hits, while striking out six.  Alex Summers and Mike Cogliano secured the win for Gloucester County by pitching scoreless innings in the eighth and ninth.  Brett Hudson pitched seven innings for Camden allowing four runs, nine hits, while striking out three.  The Region XIX championship will be decided on Saturday when Camden and Gloucester square off again at noon.
