LINCROFT, NJ- Brookdale Community College student-athlete Kathleen Sharp was named the 2012-2013 John Stauff Female Scholar Athlete of the Year at the annual NJCAA Region XIX awards gala held on October 10th. The honor is given out each year to one female student-athlete from a Region XIX institution who excels in her scholastic and athletic pursuits.
A two-sport athlete, Sharp was a key contributor on the softball and women's soccer teams. She earned First-Team honors from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association as well as Second-Team All-NJCAA accolades in softball.
"Sharpie exemplifies the best of a student-athlete," softball head coach Bo Scannapieco said. "She was proficient in the classroom and her softball skills are incredible. I'm thankful to have had the opportunity to coach her for two years."
When she wasn't playing a sport, Sharp served as co-chair of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and volunteered as a police dispatch in her hometown of Toms River during Hurricane Sandy. In addition to her exceptional athletic and community involvement, Sharp was also an Academic All American for her outstanding efforts in the classroom.
Sharp graduated from Brookdale in May with honors and a degree in environmental science. She is now a student-athlete at the University of Maryland-Baltimore County where she plays softball.
