[Men's Wrestling] Gloucester Wrestling Claims NJCAA Eastern District Title

LANCASTER, Pa. - The Gloucester County College Roadrunner Wrestling Team will be
taking a full contingent to the NJCAA National Tournament in Rochester,
MN. All ten of GCC's wrestlers qualified during the NJCAA Eastern
District Tournament held on Saturday February 11 at Thaddeus Stevens
College in Lancaster, PA. Along the way the team picked up its first
District Championship in wrestling since the 2002 season.

The Roadrunners followed the direction of first year Head Coach Pete
DiPol who made it a point of emphasis all week to treat each match as it
were for the championship, whether it be a main draw match or a
wrestleback. The Roadrunners took that to heart as each wrestler earned
team points on the way to the victory and battled in wrestleback matches
so no wrestler finished worse than fourth in his weight class.
Sophomores Justin Pencook 157lb. and Lou Shearer 133lb. both won
District Championships while Hugh Nawn 125lb., Ray Martinez 165lb., and
Brian Lussier 197lb. were runners-up in their weight classes. Chalie
Huff 141lb., John Chillem 149lb., Anthony Dawson 174lb., Josh Ploof
184lb., and Alex Green 285lb. all did tremendous work in the wrestleback
matches to earn team points and qualify themselves for the National
Tournament.

While there were great moments throughout the day the standout moment
came when Shearer turned a precarious position into a pinfall victory
in his championship match over Nassau CC which gave GCC a strong hold on
the lead in the tournament. Minutes later Pencook ground to a patient
and technical win in his championship round match over Spartanburg
Methodist to seal the win for GCC.

The Roadrunner wrestlers now have nearly two weeks to prepare
themselves for the toughest test of the season at the NJCAA Nationals.
The tournament will be hosted in Rochester, MN from February 23-25. The
tournament website is: http://www.rochsports.org/2012njcaawrestling.php

CAPE COD, Ma. - Mr. Brandon Kinsey, Executive Director of Basketball Power Rankings, Inc. and the BPR Committee have released their latest rankings for Region XIX.

Division II Men
1. Essex
2. Lackawanna
3. Salem
Essex remains the clear cut #1 in DII men's with a 14-1 league mark and a 17-6 record overall. Lackawanna is #2 after putting together a 5-2 mark since the last rankings were released. Salem jumps into the 3 spot on the heels of their 20 point victory over Raritan Valley, though Kinsey and the committee have been impressed by Morris as well.

Division II Women
1. Lackawanna
2. Union
3. Harcum
Lackawanna is the new #1 with a 10-2 record since break and an 11-point victory over Union last week. The Owls drop to #2 despite leading the region with a 15-2 record and 18-5 overall mark. The Committee chose Harcum at #3, despite Burlington's better region and overall records.

Division III Men
1. Camden
2. Brookdale
3. Ocean
Camden, winners of 10 straight, remain #1 in the latest rankings. The Cougars knocked off #3 Ocean by 26 this week and are poised for their showdown with Brookdale on February 21st. The Jersey Blues check in at #2 with a 21-2 mark in the region and a 7-game winning streak. Ocean is #3, though they appear to be limping to the finish line with an 8-6 mark this semester. JaMario Clayton is making a claim to repeat as Region Player of the Year.

Division III Women
1. Ocean
2. Northampton
3. Brookdale
While the top 3 in this division are pretty distinct, their order is not. Ocean swept Brookdale, which beat Northampton by 35 earlier in the year, only to lose to the Spartans on February 2nd. NCC defeated Ocean by 16 earlier in the year and then fell in Toms River on February 4th by 6. The regional tournament in this division is up for grabs, though the homecourt advantage in Lincroft may prove to be the deciding factor.

The BPR is a subjective measure of a team's strength based on a number of factors including overall record, region record, strength of schedule, success on the road, recent trends and the input of the national media.

The BPR is solely for discussion purposes and will not have a bearing on the seeding for Regionals.
