[Women's Tennis] Gloucester Wins, Region 19 Dominates Women's Tennis National Tournament

The Gloucester County College Roadrunners secured the 2012 NJCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championship by taking five championship matches as part of "Finals Friday" at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens, N.Y. Playing in the shadows of Arthur Ashe Stadium, three Roadrunners took home singles division prizes, while two doubles teams provided insurance points in the afternoon session. Leading the way for Brian Rowan's squad was Terra McHenry, Tori Yeich, and Kelly Stanton in singles play, while Jessica Barney provided a needed spark in the No. 3 doubles competition. McHenry ousted Ocean County College's (N.J.) Allison Dennis in No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-3. Yeich and Stanton downed Ocean's Emily Gaydos (6-2, 6-3) and Mercer's Kelly Tanzone (7-5, 6-1) to win the fourth and fifth singles flights respectively. It was the first NJCAA National Championship for the Roadrunner Women's Tennis program who also won the Garden State Athletic Conference Championship and Region 19 Championship during the 2012 season.

The GCC Women's Tennis Team completed a dramatic comeback on Sunday afternoon to claim the colleges first NJCAA Region 19 Championship for the 2012-13 academic year. The Roadrunners needed to win their final three matches of the day to catch or pass tournament leader Ocean CC and did so with three doubles wins all by first year players in the program. The title is the first for Roadrunner Women's Tennis since 2009 and now they automatically advance to the NJCAA Region 19 Tournament October 24-26 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, NY.

[Women's Tennis] Women's Tennis Region Tournament Underway - Day 1 Recap

Ocean CC has a small lead after the first day of play in the NJCAA Region 19 Women's Tennis Tournament. The weather cooperated and the level of play was excellent on Day 1 of the tournament which looks to be headed for an exciting conclusion on Sunday.

The Vikings will be competing in four of the championship singles matches starting at 10am on Sunday at Gloucester County College. The Vikings have also advanced into the finals in two of the three doubles flights in the tournament. Ocean's top four players have led the team to win wins in four of their last five team matches and hope to carry that momentum to the region championship.

The Roadrunners of Gloucester CC are currently in second place by a slim margin over Mercer CC. Gloucester won the regular season GSAC championship and will compete in five of the singles championship matches tomorrow. The Roadrunners can still earn points in two of the doubles flights as well. Mercer is in reach of the top spot in the tournament as well after a dramatic three set win at #1 doubles over Gloucester that was the final match on court on Day 1.

The tournament marked the first year back in competition for the reinstated women's program at Bergen CC under head coach Sal Guillen and Athletic Director Jorge Hernandez. The team scored a win on Day 1 and looks to have a bright future.

[Women's Tennis] Mercer Wins Women's Tennis Championship

The Mercer CC Vikings Women's Tennis Team captured the 2011 NJCAA Region 19 Championship by winning four of their six final round matches Sunday at Gloucester County College. The Vikings also captured the individual singles title (Alison Noll) and the doubles title (Noll/Ewa Szysko). The team was challenged most closely by Ocean CC that finished the tournament with eight team points, two behind Mercer CC's winning total of 10.

Noll was the dominant player in the tournament dropping only one game on the way to the singles title and not dropping a set along with her partner Szysko in the doubles event. Mercer was also aided by depth and players that improved over the course of the season. They picked up points by also winning the singles titles at #5 (Kelly Tanzone) and #6 singles (Alina Vituknovskaya).

Mercer will represent Region 19 at the NJCAA Division III National Championship Tournament October 26-28 at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, NY.

SEWELL, NJ - Ocean CC finished second at this weekend's NJCAA Region 19 Women's Tennis Tournament hosted by Gloucester County College. The Vikings won individual championships at #3 singles (Ann Marie Wodell), #4 Singles (Kaitlyn SCrudato) and #2 Doubles (Wodell/Mikaela Louise Chua) and finished with a team total of eight points.

Ocean will represent Region 19 at the NJCAA Division III National Championship Tournament October 26-28 at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, NY.

Mercer CC took the lead after the first day of play at the 2011 NJCAA Region 19 Women's Tennis Tournament. On a sunny but very windy day at Gloucester County College the Vikings won six of their nine semifinal matches to and will enter the final day of play with a slight lead over second place Ocean CC.

[Women's Tennis] Gloucester CC Set to NJCAA Region 19 Women's Tennis Tournament

Gloucester County College is set to host the 2011 NJCAA Region 19 Women's Tennis Tournament on October 15-16. Tournament play will begin at 10am on Saturday morning with semifinal singles matches followed by semifinal doubles matches. Final round singles matches will begin on Sunday at 10am followed by final round doubles matches. Region 19 has traditionally done well at the national level and with top talent this year throughout the region teams that qualify will be favored to do well again this season.

Preview:
Ocean CC and Mercer CC look to be the favorites in the tournament. The two teams split matches during the season and finished in the top two spots in the NIT Tournament during the season. Ocean is scheduled to play at Brookdale CC on October 12 and with a win will wrap up the regular season crown. Ocean has a deep team that has shown balance during the season to score most of their wins. Mercer is led by returning NJCAA Singles Champion Alison Noll but has also shown improvement over the season at their other positions.

Brookdale CC and Gloucester CC have both shown flashes of potential during the season and either team could be a sleeper in the tournament and climb to the top of the podium. Brookdale is the defending tournament champion while Gloucester returns four players from a team that finished second at the NJCAA National Tournament last May in Tucson, AZ.

The Coaches and Seeding Meeting for the tournament will be held Thursday October 13^th during the bi-annual Region 19 Meetings in Somerset, NJ. Seedings will be posted here on Friday prior to the tournament.

[Women's Tennis] Region XIX Finishes Strong Women's Tennis Nationals

Region XIX was represented in eight of the nine championship round matches on Wednesday at the beautiful Refkin Tennis Center in Tucson, AZ and it turned out to be an exciting and competitive day for several of our region schools. Gloucester CC scored the best overall as a team finishing with 21 total points and a 2^nd place finish. Brookdale CC was only one point behind Gloucester for a strong 3^rd place finish. And Mercer CC took home the individual Singles Championship as Alison Noll won the championship match over Oxford College's Ayana Groves.

Despite the fact that Oxford CC takes a five point lead into the final day of competition at the Women's Tennis National Championships, Region XIX has two teams that could overtake them on the final day and the region will also be represented in 8 of the 9 championship round matches including the Individual Singles and Doubles Championship Matches.

Oxford College #1 singles player Ayana Groves led the charge today as her team took a commanding lead at the NJCAA Women's Tennis Division III National Championship. Groves scored a dominating 6-0, 6-1 win in her semifinal singles match and then teamed with Vaijayanthi Lakshmipathy for a 6-3, 6-4 win at doubles to give Oxford momentum. The Eagles went on to win five more matches and take a big lead into the final day of competition at the beautiful Refkin Tennis Center in Tuscon, AZ.

Gloucester CC won four out of their five matches on Day 1 at the NJCAA Women's Tennis National Championships to take the early lead in the tournament. On Tuesday all the tournament's top guns will be in action as many of the top seeds received byes for the first round. The Roadrunners finished tied for fourth last season and now lead the tournament and are still alive in the main draw in eight of the nine available flights. Only Oxford CC is still alive in more main draws.

NJCAA Region 19 will be well-represented at this weeks NJCAA Division III National Championships in Tucson, AZ. Each of the four teams competing in Region 19 have sent players to the tournament including Region Champs Brookdale CC, region runner-ups Gloucester CC and the top two players from both Ocean CC and Mercer CC. Head Coaches Karen McLaughlin, Lauren Morgan, Stan Friedman, and Marc Vecciola (pictured above L to R) wished each other luck at the Banquet on Sunday night prior to the start of the Division III competition on Monday.
