[Region XIX] Case and Tucker Honored by NACDA

ORLANDO, Fl. - Ron Case of Gloucester County College and Troy Tucker of Northampton Community College were honored on Saturday at the 48th annual NACDA convention as recipients of the 2013 Under Armour Athletic Director of the Year Award. Case and Tucker were two of 28 honorees spanning seven divisions (NCAA FBS, FCS, Division I-AAA, Division II, Division III, NAIA and Junior/Community College).

All NACDA-member directors of athletics in the United States, Canada and Mexico who met the criteria were eligible for the award. Among the criteria were service as an AD for a minimum of five consecutive academic years, demonstration of commitment to higher education and student-athletes; continuous teamwork, loyalty and excellence; and the ability to inspire individuals or groups to high levels of accomplishments. Additionally, each AD's institution must have passed a compliance check through its appropriate governing body in which the institution could not have been on probation or cited for a lack of institutional control within the last five years during the tenure of the current athletics director.

Case, who is in his 22nd year at Gloucester, has guided the Roadrunners program to unprecedented heights, winning 25 NJCAA national championships and the 2012-13 Learfield Cup as the top two-year athletic program in the country.

Tucker, who just finished his 5th year at Northampton, spearheaded Northampton's ultra-successful transition to the NJCAA in 2009, leading the Spartan program to two regional championships and four runner-up finishes in additon to several national top-10 rankings.

Case and Tucker are both extensively involved with Region XIX, with Case serving as Women's Director and Tucker serving as a member of the Region Executive Committee.

Today in Orlando, FL the GCC Roadrunner Athletic Program received the highest honor a program can recieve - the Learfield Sports Directors' Cup. Athletic Director Ron Case and Asst. Athletic Director Brian Rowan accepted the award in the Learfield Sports Directors' Cup Awards Luncheon held as part of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) Convention.

[Region XIX] Former CCM Athletic Director / Coach to be Honored by NACDA

RANDOLPH, NJ — Following a career in which he helped build the County College of Morris (CCM) Department of Athletics while furthering the cause of student-athletes at two-year colleges, Jack Martin is being recognized by his peers across the nation.

Martin, of Randolph and the former long-time athletic director at CCM, has been selected as a member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) 2013 Hall of Fame class.

"It kind of stunned me and I was pleasantly humbled," says Martin, who has been involved with the organization for more than 30 years. "I think anyone in any profession hopes that if you've done a really good job that down the road your work will be recognized."

Martin will be inducted on Friday, June 14, during NACDA's 48th Annual Convention at the Learfield Sports Directors' Cup Awards Luncheon at the World Center Marriott Resort in Orlando, FL. He also has been asked to accept the enshrinement for the entire hall of fame class. Joining him at the ceremony will be his wife, Pamela, daughter Devon Martin-Jones and son-in-law Parker Jones.

Martin will also be inducted during the same week into the National Alliance of Two Year College Athletic Administrators (NATYCAA) Hall of Fame, an honor he received last year but was unable to accept in person at the ceremony in Dallas.

"I'll be able to renew some of my deep friendships with the two-year group I'm largely associated with," Martin says about NATYCAA, which he's served as a member of its executive committee. "After so many years together in organizations, it will be nice to go back and talk about some great old times we've had. To have two honors bestowed upon me in three days, it's special."

It was Martin who was instrumental in securing Pepsi-Cola North America as the sponsor of the NATYCAA Cup, an awards program for two-year colleges and universities.

"That was one of my greatest achievements, to get a national sponsor with that much recognition," Martin says. "We got them because one of my former players (CCM graduate Terry Ryan) was then vice president of Pepsi-Cola. He got into it with open arms and was delighted as a past junior college graduate."

Martin worked for CCM from 1968 until 2002. Originally hired to teach in the physical education department and coach the newly created men's basketball and baseball teams, Martin quickly became the coordinator of athletics in the spring of 1968, and then the college's first athletic director in 1971. He also continued to coach the men's basketball team through the 1997-98 season.

Under Martin's watch, CCM won 35 New Jersey state championships and 29 Region XIX titles. He also won eight state titles and three regional championships as basketball coach. He currently holds New Jersey's all-time college basketball coaching wins record. Martin is also a member of the National Junior College Basketball Hall of Fame and the Morris Hills High School Hall of Fame, of which he is a graduate, former teacher and boys basketball coach.

NACDA is the professional and educational association for more than 6,500 college athletics administrators at more than 1,600 institutions throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico. More than 2,200 athletics administrators annually attend the NACDA Convention.

"We look forward to welcoming Jack into the NACDA Hall of Fame at our Annual Convention in June," said NACDA Executive Director Bob Vecchione. "This is a well-deserved honor for a man who helped make NATYCAA what it is today, while dedicating his life to the County College of Morris and the athletic director profession. His induction into multiple other halls of fame is a testament to his leadership and vitality to the profession."

[Region XIX] Region XIX Claims Six National Championships During 2012-13

MOORE TOWNSHIP, Pa. - Led by Gloucester County College's amazing five national titles, Region XIX claimed six NJCAA National team Championships during the 2012-13 season.

Gloucester started off the year winning Women's Tennis and Women's Cross Country in the Fall, Brookdale Community College then captured the Men's Basketball title during the Winter and Gloucester County came back in the Spring with championships in Men's Tennis, Women's Track & Field and Baseball.

"What a great year for our Region," remarked John Kuntz, Region XIX Director, "to win six NJCAA Division III team championships in one year is quite a feat ... everyone in our Region should be proud."

[Region XIX] Region XIX Spring Meeting Set for Atlantic City

MOORE TOWNSHIP, Pa. - The 32 Athletic Directors in Region XIX will meet this Tuesday and Wednesday in Atlantic City for their annual Spring Meeting.

Topics for the two-day meeting will include officiating proposals for softball, new NJCAA eligibility rules for 2013-14, continued Region expansion and postseason tournament seeding and all-region selections.

In additon, the Garden State Athletic Conference (GSAC) and Eastern Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (EPAC) will each meet to discuss conference related topics.

[Region XIX] Union County College Title IX Celebration

CRANFORD, NJ - Union County College will host the 1st Annual O.W.L. Celebration, saluting Outstanding Women Leaders at the Roy Smith Theater on Wednesday April 24th from 6:30pm to 8:30pm. The celebration is part of Union's year-long tribute to Title IX.

The mission of this event is to celebrate the 40^th Anniversary of the Federal Law Title IX through remembrance, education and to acknowledge female athletes of Union County.

No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance. -Text of Title IX

Throughout the night there will be guest speakers, picture slideshows, videos and some memorabilia of Title IX. This is a wonderful time to come out with your mother or daughter to share in the celebrations!

TITLE IX EVENT GUEST SPEAKERS

Linda Carter, Chair of the Union County Freeholders will host the event and honor the young female athletes of Union County.

Carol "Blaze"Blazejowski is an alumna of Cranford High School and Montclair University. Ms. Blazejowski is considered to be one of the most influential trailblazers for women's basketball and Title IX. Her tenure at Montclair was impressive with being named All-American three times along with being inducted into the Hall of Fame. Post college she was captain of the U.S. women's Olympic basketball team and later inducted into the National Basketball Hall of Fame. Ms. Blazejowski also spent 14 years as president and general manager of WNBA's New York Liberty.

Dr. Lilyan Wright is a former professor, administrator, coach and founder of a number of women's athletics programs at TCNJ. She is a pioneer in the field of women's intercollegiate sports. Her advocacy of women's rights in education and athletics was a major influence in the success of the Equity in Athletics Disclosure Act.

Anne Donovan has achieved countless accolades throughout the sport of basketball. She has been named All-American, played on several national championship teams, and won Olympic Gold to just name a few. Ms. Donovan has also been inducted into several Hall of Fames for her tremendous accomplishments. She transitioned to the other side of the sport and coached on the collegiate and professional level.

[Region XIX] #1 Seeds Announced in Division II and Division III Basketball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Region XIX basketball committee has announced the #1 seeds for the upcoming Region XIX basketball tournaments.

Essex County College, with a 16-0 record in Region XIX (22-6 overall) earned the number one spot in Division II men, while Brookdale Community College (20-0 Region XIX / 27-0 overall) earned the Division III top spot from the GSAC. Northampton (13-1 / 18-8) earned the EPAC #1 seed in Division III.

On the women's side, Burlington (17-1 / 22-6) is the top seed in Division II, while Passaic (15-3 / 18-5) grabbed the number one spot from the GSAC in Division III and Northampton (10-0 / 24-1) was the top seed from the EPAC in Division III.

The full brackets can be found under the men's and women's basketball links on the left side of the Region XIX website. The DII bracket is combined, with the both the men's and women's under the same link, while the DIII brackets are separate for men and women.

[Region XIX] Northampton Set to Add Men's Lacrosse and Cross Country

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Northampton Community College Director of Athletics Troy Tucker has announced that the college will add cross country and men's lacrosse to their intercollegiate athletic program for 2013-14.

"We are very excited to be adding sports to our program," stated Tucker, "the addition of cross country and men's lacrosse shows the commitment that the college has to intercollegiate athletics and the belief in the positive aspects that a well-rounded program can bring to the campus and the community."

Cross Country, which will sponsor both men's and women's teams, will begin competition this Fall as a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) and compete in Region XIX and the Eastern Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (EPAC).

Men's Lacrosse will open play in Spring 2014 as a NJCAA member and join Brookdale Community College, Del Tech Terry, County College of Morris and Union County College in Region XIX.

The new sports join men's soccer, women's volleyball, golf, men's basketball, women's basketball, tennis, baseball and softball as intercollegiate offerings at Northampton.

[Region XIX] Sussex Shows Support for Ocean

NEWTON, NJ - The Sussex County Community College Skylanders showed their support for Ocean County College with a presentation of a check for monies raised at a previous home game this past Thursday, January 3, 2012. Many of the students and student athletes who attend Ocean CC experienced major effects from Super Storm Sandy including loss of their homes and personal possessions. Restore the Shore T-Shirts were also given to both teams from Ocean, as well as both Sussex teams, to wear before the game.

Sussex charged a $3 entrance fee ,with games normally being free of charge to see, on December 13 for a home game against Bergen County Community College. Separate donations were also encouraged and the total amount was presented to Ocean CC, in check form, to the women's basketball coach before the first game.

Ocean ended up winning both contests with the women winning 70-51, and the men winning 67-54.

[Region XIX] Baseball / Softball Coaches Meeting Set for January 14th

MOORE TOWNSHIP, Pa. - Region XIX will conduct its annual baseball and softball coaches meeting on Monday January 14th at 6pm at Mercer County Community College in Trenton, NJ.

Region XIX executive committee members will be hand, as well as the chairs of the baseball and softball committees. All head coaches should attend this event, assistant coaches are welcome as well.

There will be discussion regarding playoff format, all-region voting, stats, rule changes and the respective sport codes.
