NEWARK, NJ - Andre Colebrook had a busy summer before returning to Essex CC for his sophomore year this month. After a strenuous training regimen, he competed in the Pan American Junior Championships in his signature event, the 800 meter run, and won the bronze medal for his third place finish.
"My goals for this meet were to get to the finals and win a medal, so I accomplished what I set out to do," said the Liberal Arts major who came to ECC by way of Eleuthera in the Bahamas. The Pan American games were held August 23-25 in Medellin, Colombia. He will turn 20 next March, so this was the last junior championships in which he could compete where there is an age limit of 19.
Andre's time in the finals was 1:51.47, a little under his best time of 1:50.80 in the event. Overall, Andre said he was satisfied with the results.
He spent the summer back home training for the event by running on grass. "It's a bit harder to run on, because the surface is softer." It paid off as evident by his winning the medal.
With the new school year starting, Andre has a busy schedule, starting first with his classwork. He is interested in going into the graphics field. He also wants to break the 1:50 time in the 800 meters, while also lowering his times in the 400 and 1500 meter runs. This fall he will also run cross country for the Wolverines, coached by Michael Smart.
Andre is already looking to schools to where he can transfer after graduating from ECC, with the University of Oregon at the top of his list.
