Essex County College Hosts Inaugural Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony

NEWARK, NJ – Essex County College celebrated a momentous occasion on Friday, May 9th, 2025, as they held their Inaugural Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony in the Cleo Hill Physical Education Building. This historic event honored outstanding athletes, coaches, teams, and contributors who have made a significant impact on the college's athletics program.

The ceremony, attended by alumni, faculty, staff, and community supporters, marked the beginning of a new tradition for Essex County College. The inductees, representing a diverse range of sports, were recognized for their exceptional achievements and dedication to excellence both on and off the field.

Throughout the evening, attendees enjoyed heartfelt speeches, video tributes, and a celebration of the legacy that these individuals have left within the Essex athletics community. The event not only celebrated past accomplishments but also served to inspire future generations of student-athletes.

The inaugural inductees into the Essex County College Wolverines Athletics Hall of Fame included Hon. Sharpe James, the college's first director of athletics (1968–1986); Russell Rogers, ECC's first national champion and former track and field coach (1971–1978); Cleo Hill Sr., former men's basketball coach and athletics director (1984–1995); and the 1973–74 men's basketball team, which set the national junior college scoring record. Also honored were Olympians Melanie Walker (2002–2004), who earned a gold medal in women's track and field; Novlene Williams-Mills (2001–2002), who won silver and bronze medals; and Kerron Stewart, a decorated sprinter who competed at the highest levels of international competition. 

"We are incredibly proud to honor these individuals who have helped shape the legacy of Essex athletics," said David Tomkins, Director of Athletics at Essex County College. "Their success continues to inspire current and future generations of Wolverines, and tonight, we celebrate them for their dedication and excellence."

The ceremony concluded with the revealing of the Essex County College Wolverines Athletics Hall of Fame wall located in the Cleo Hill Physical Education Building main hallway.

Essex County College looks forward to continuing this tradition of honoring the remarkable individuals who have contributed to the success of our athletic programs.
